As the chocolate refers to the man, she is putting forth the idea that the man is a very delicate and lovely man, having the qualities of a gentleman. She described the chocolate to be “velvet” and “exquisite” creating a sense of beauty and smoothness. She attained so much satisfaction from it that “any woman would gladly/ crumble to ruin”, implying that any woman would give up all she has just for this enticing and attractive man. It symbolizes the luxury and happiness she feel from having him. There is sensory imagery of “Knotted smoke, dark punch of earth and night and leaf “ suggests the chocolate is very rich in flavor. Hence, she is implying that if she didn’t respond quick enough to the advances of the lover(/man), he will slip away from her and leave her. From the lines, “If I don’t eat you quickly, you’ll melt in my palm”, we can see that if she didn’t eat the chocolate quickly, it will melt to nothingness. Rita Dove uses visual imagery of the chocolate melting to create a sense of the lover slipping away. Be it milk or dark, chocolate releases endorphins that makes a person biologically release stress and feel pleasure and joy instead. Chocolate is usually used as a representation of love. The chocolate symbolizes the intoxicating love, a pleasure that she will gladly gives up everything for. She uses chocolate as an extended metaphor to represent a man. Reflection : Rita Dove is using the process of eating chocolate to imply the feelings she have towards romantic relationships.
